Phoning Home

There are plenty of pay phones in the street. To make a connection with the UK you need 1.80€ and plenty of change to hand. It is recommended to insert a small denomination, such as 10 centimos, first to see if it registers and confirms the phone is working. Phone cards can be purchased from tobacconists, the post office (Correos) or any other outlet where you see the "Telefonica" phonecard sign. They are used in the same way as at home.

To phone the UK, dial 00 44 then the number you are calling, but omitting the first 0 from the local area dialling code. For example if you want to call 0151 489 3455 you would dial 00 44 151 489 3455. The code for the Republic of Ireland is 00 353 followed by the number you wish to call.

To make a Reverse Charge call to the UK via a British operator dial 900 99 00 44 for a free call to British Telecom.

All Mallorcan landline numbers begin with 971 and mobile numbers with a 6. To call a mobile phone on the island you will need a minimum of 1€ to be connected, then simply dial the complete number.

Alternatively some change bureaux offer phones for public use where you make your call from a booth and are charged at the end though these are often more costly than the payphones in the street.
